Flourescent light, reflecting in a hot cup of ocha.

Kyoto, Japan.

No PS DoF here. Just a sweet Canon EF 50/1.8 Mark I. I've had the lens 15 years and it would be the last lens I'd ever get rid of, if I ever had to get rid of any lens.

Very cool effect! How did you do it? ^_^ Or would you prefer not to give away trade secrets?

No trade secret. Open up the aperature as wide as it will go (or close), compose and shoot.

Works best with a fast lens (2.8 or faster).

No worries. Not stupid at all.

It's a tea cup, sitting on the table in a small restaurant, with the reflection of the overhead lights on the tea.

I focused on the reflection of the light on the tea and let the surroundings melt away.

Best lens you can get for the money. The Mark I (like I have) is hard to find these days, but you can find the 50/1.8 Mark II anywhere for about $65 brand new. The difference between the Mark I and Mark II is the way it was built, but the image quality is the same.
